When to Quit Your Job for Your Business: The 75% Rule. (EP. 018)
Feb 12, 2026You're lying awake at 2am doing the math again.
Your side hustle is growing.
You're making sales.
But every time you think about quitting your job, you freeze.
"I don't make enough yet. I need to match my salary first."
Sound familiar?
Here's the truth: That advice is keeping you stuck.
The Worst Advice About Quitting Your Job
"Match your salary before you quit."
You've heard it from business coaches. From well-meaning family. From people who've never built anything giving you advice about building something.
And it sounds responsible. Safe. Smart.
It's a trap.
If you're making $65,000 at your job and you think you need $65,000 from your business before you can leave, you could stay stuck for YEARS chasing a number that doesn't even matter.
Why doesn't it matter?
Because a huge chunk of your expenses only exist BECAUSE you're employed.
The Hidden Cost of Your 9-5
Think about what you spend money on just because you have a job:
- The commute: gas, tolls, car maintenance, or transit passes
- The wardrobe: work clothes, dry cleaning, uncomfortable shoes
- The food: expensive lunches because you're too drained to meal prep
- The coffee: $6 lattes to survive the afternoon
- The "treats": purchases to cope because your job is draining your soul
Add it up. It's probably $500-1,000+ per month that vanishes when you leave.
So the real question isn't: How do I match my salary?
The real question is: What do I actually NEED to live and be generous?
That's a very different number.
The 75% Rule: How to Know When You're Ready to Quit
After 20 years of building digital businesses across three continents, here's what I've learned:
You don't need to match your salary.
You need to hit 75% of your actual essential expenses.
That's it.
When your business income covers 75% of what you truly need; consistently, for three months, you have your green light.
Not when you "feel ready." Not when your family approves. When the numbers say go.
Here's the simple math:
- Calculate your TRUE essentials (housing, food, transportation, insurance, giving)
- Multiply by 0.75
- That's your transition number
Everything else is noise.
She Was Already Ready (And Didn't Know It)
My friend Carolina was a bilingual executive assistant at a tech company in Houston. Good job. Stable paycheck. Soul completely drained.
Her salary: $65,000 a year. Her side business: $2,800 a month.
She thought she was nowhere close to ready.
So I walked her through the 75% Rule.
Her actual essentials? Rent, car payment, groceries, insurance, tithe. About $3,200 a month.
Her business was at $2,800. That's 87% of her essentials.
She was already PAST the threshold and didn't even know it.
The "match your salary" advice had her chasing $5,400 a month when she only needed $3,200.
She quit two months later. That was 14 months ago.
Today? $5,400 a month. Works from home. Takes her kids to school and picks them up. Just got back from two weeks visiting family in Mexico, laptop in hand, still serving clients.
She didn't need to match $65,000. She needed the right math.
And it's not just Carolina. María used this same framework to make her transition. Ana messaged me last week saying she's two months away from her number. This is happening right now, with women just like you.
How Close Are You Really?
You might be closer than you think.
I created a free exercise called The Transition Timeline that walks you through this entire calculation in 15 minutes.
By the end you'll know:
- Your real essential expenses (not your inflated salary-matching number)
- Your actual 75% transition threshold
- Exactly how close you already are
- What it would take to close the gap
It's inside the Latinpreneurs Vault, completely free.
But here's what most women discover.
The gap isn't just money. It's missing pieces.
When you do the exercise, you'll also answer five honest questions about where you really are: Do you have an offer people have paid for? A way to find clients consistently? Systems that work while you sleep?
Most women realize they have the dream but not the roadmap.
The Complete System Is Coming
That's why I'm building something bigger.
The complete system. Everything I've learned in 20+ years of building digital businesses. Step by step. From "I have an idea" to "I have a business that sustains me" in six months.
When it launches, women in the Vault get first access and a price that won't repeat.
But for now? Start with your number.
